Installation of Optimast® MASH Frangible Sign Support for Ipswich City Council

Ipswich City Council faced a significant challenge when a storm damaged a large 10m² guide sign and its steel breakaway system. To replace the damaged sign, the council considered the Optimast® MASH frangible sign support system, known for meeting the highest MASH TL3 road safety standard and wind load capacity.

The primary challenge was to identify a frangible sign support system that not only met the rigorous MASH TL3 standards and Queensland TMR standards but also provided adequate stability for large guide signs. Additionally, the council needed a solution that could be installed efficiently and with minimal disruption to traffic flow.

Ipswich City Council Traffic Facilities Co-Ordinator, Mr Shayne Smith, collaborated with Signfix to develop a solution for the project. The sign parameters, geotechnical soil conditions, and terrain category were input into the Signfix Calculator, the results indicated that the Optimast® frangible post system was the optimal choice. The Optimast® system is engineered to adhere to the strictest road safety standards, making it ideal for supporting large guide signs.

Constructed from high-quality materials, the Optimast® system ensures long-lasting durability. Its design also facilitates easy installation, which is crucial for minimising traffic disruptions. This was a critical factor for Ipswich City Council, as they needed to complete the installation swiftly to reduce the impact on traffic.

The installation of the Optimast® system was successful, meeting all required safety standards. The project was completed with minimal traffic disruption, and the large directional guide sign is now securely in place.

The Project

Signfix was recently approached by Barrier Signs to provide frangible sign supports for a large 25m2 directional guide sign along the M1 Motorway in Cundletown on the Mid North Coast of NSW. Our challenge was to find frangible sign supports that met specific safety standards.

The Challenge

Barrier Signs needed frangible sign supports that met frangibility and wind loading capacity requirements. After careful consideration, we recommended Optimast MASH TL3 frangible sign supports as the best solution. The Optimast system is designed to meet the safest road standards specifications, maximising road safety for road users in the area, while minimising traffic disruptions due to the ease of installation.

Our Solution

We provided the solution with Optimast 244mm x 8.0m MASH TL3 frangible signposts. These signposts are on the TfNSW Approved Safety Barriers specification and provided the necessary support for the large guide sign for TfNSW. The Optimast system was designed to meet the frangibility and wind loading capacity requirements for the sign support, ensuring maximum safety for all road users.

Our stock maintenance of the Optimast system ensured a fast and economical solution for the client. This meant that the installation was completed with minimal disruption to traffic, and the guide sign was installed safely and securely, meeting all necessary safety standards.

Signfix aluminium poles featured in one of the largest infrastructure projects Main Roads WA undertook in 2016. The Gateway WA project involved a major upgrade to the road network surrounding Perth Airports and the freight and industrial hubs of Kewdale and Forrestfield.

The billion-dollar upgrade to one of Western Australia’s most important interchanges aim is to ease congestion of the expected doubling of passenger air travel, and road freight throughout the surround suburbs over the coming decade.

A joint statement from both Federal and State Governments affirmed, “This project has delivered a safer and more efficient transport network around Perth Airport and the freight and industrial areas of Kewdale and Forrestfield.”

With freight movement expected to intensify in the regions, the use of the Signfix patented aluminium poles across the project was viewed as a long-term a strategic investment in safer roads and efficient maintenance.

With so much activity expected, including an increase in trucking movement, the frangible pole system is the ideal choice of signage pole, when signs are brushed/clipped or collided with, the sign will break away as the frangible pole shatters on impact. Frangibility protects road users and allows maintenance crews to swiftly replace the poles and re-erect the signs, without having to reset foundations or replace signs.

Signfix Aluminium Frangible pole system is fast becoming the preferred choice for roadside contractors, sign installers and State Road Authorities across Australia and internationally.
